New Community Mural |
![]() | |
The Arts Council at Freeport is embarking on a funded mural arts project. Initial funding (for the artist fee and materials) is provided by the AARP Community Challenge grant. Additional funding will be used for other expenses (site preparation, equipment, site safety, etc.) We’re requesting that interested muralists contact us through our email to learn more about the project and how to submit your portfolio and mural idea for consideration. (In the email subject line type: “Mural Project”). Submissions must be received by July 31, 2018 (EXTENDED TO AUGUST 20TH). The mural should reflect the artist’s interpretation of Freeport’s history (http://freeporthistorymuseum.org), geography and community, as well as the site location. So many of Freeport's current murals are realistic depictions of boats, waves, docks, etc. We're hoping this mural to be more fun, whimsical, interpretive, a bit abstract.
Mural wall is part of the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 West Merrick Rd., Freeport NY 11520
Brick wall dimensions: 53 feet long; 20 feet high; panel design in wall is 171 inches wide by 80 inches high
There are three panels; same size and brick pattern.
(Your choice to just paint the panels, or the entire wall, or any combination)
Wall will be power washed.
Will have powerlift (cherrypicker).
Project budget is between $4,000 and $9,000
Commencement Date: after Labor Day
Completion Date: November 5th
Front entrance to library from Merrick Rd. with mural wall on left.
Close up perspective of the wall (sign can be removed).
View of wall from across the front lawn. Library entrance is on the right.
Close ups of brick pattern in wall 'panel'. All three panels are identical.
Send your submissions as attachments by email to infoLIACF@gmail.com or use a cloud-based file system (i.e., dropbox, etc.). In the subject line, type "Mural Project").
Please provide at least 3 and no more than 7 work samples of previous mural projects.
A concept drawing and dimensions for the proposed mural design for this specific location. (Once selected, you may submit a more detailed drawing/design.)
Your submission will be evaluated based
on the following criteria:
Professional qualifications, documented capability and experience to complete the project successfully in the required timeframe.
Artistic excellence, innovation, originality, and/or perspective
Level of relevance to theme as stated above.
Artwork submitted is Artist’s original, creative work - Proposals which contain imagery that is copyrighted by a different entity, stolen or copied from any other source will not be considered. Historic images/imagery may be incorporated if public domain or with permission for use.
Application is submitted by the published deadline.
Proposed budget for your services. This budget is expected to be complete. Please be sure to include information about the number of people that will be working on the mural (e.g. just you, or a chosen crew, paints, supplies).
Submissions must be identified with an alias – this will be a blind judging system. Include a separate document that has your alias and your true name and contact information.
Submit any questions, clarifications, etc. to the same email address.
This mural project must be completed by November of this year.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

COME TO THE CABARET! SHADES OF GREY: A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO JOEL GREY |
![]() | |
This performance was held on Sunday, April 22, 2012.
Congregation B'nai Israel, Freeport
Conceived, directed and performed by Bob Spiotto
Musical direction by Stephen C. Pagano
This performance was in memory of Bernard Kalban
Proceeds benefitted the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport
From his best-remembered role as the iconic Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret, both on Broadway and in the film version, to his more recent portrayal as the Wizard of Oz in Wicked, Joel Grey continues to entertain audiences of all ages. And now, continuing his own tradition of creating unique and memorable performances, Bob Spiotto takes to the boards once again, in both story and song, to educate and entertain, as he pays tribute to this legendary performer.
Click the "more" button to the right for thoughts from Bob Spiotto.
Click the link below for Bob Spiotto's biography.
This performance "I loved you as Joel Grey in Cabaret!"
That's what I've heard said countless times over the last ten years in reference to my performance as the master of ceremonies in Cabaret, presented by Hofstra Entertainment (formerly Hofstra USA Productions). I also co-produced that show in the summer of 1998, while coincidentally, the revival starring Alan Cumming was playing in New York City. I had previously played the role of the 'emcee' in high school and at another theater on Long Island as well. I have dabbled a bit with George M. (Cohan), a role that Grey created on Broadway, and have also played the role of John Adams in the musical 1776, twice, a role that Joel Grey portrayed to great critical acclaim regionally. Additionally, during my early career training at the Hannah Kroner School of Dance, I recall dancing to the overture of The Grand Tour, a show that Joel Grey also starred in on Broadway.
In 2001, I premiered my critically acclaimed one man musical tribute, Courting the Jester: A Salute to Danny Kaye, at Hofstra University, which was then re-worked and presented as part of a larger event at Lincoln Center. Over the last decade I have toured the show throughout the Long Island area with great pride and enthusiasm. Imagine my delight when I started to do some online research for my new show, Shades of Grey: A Musical Tribute to Joel Grey, and I discovered a classic television clip of another one of my favorites, Eddie Cantor, introducing Joel Grey in 1954, as “the Danny Kaye of tomorrow." Danny Kaye, Joel Grey and dare I now say myself, have all been referred to as uniquely talented showmen, each in our own generation, each of us our own ‘cast of characters’. Admittedly large shoes to fill, but a challenge that I take seriously and more importantly, one that I accept with humility and honor. For the last several years I had been 'creatively itching and twitching' to create a tribute to Joel Grey. It seemed appropriate to present the show a few years ago to honor Joel Grey on the occasion of his 75th birthday, but alas that year came and went, and still no show. Then I decided to take several cues and officially set a date to create! Those cues included the fact that during 2010-2011, Hofstra University celebrated its 75th anniversary, and for this proud Hofstra alumnus, 2010 marked my 20th anniversary working at Hofstra. Additionally, the Department of Drama and Dance presented Cabaret as part of their fall season in October of 2010. Needless to say, I took my cue, knowing the time was now! I also discovered another somewhat strange parallel. Several years ago I created and performed a one man show exploring the life and work of author and Holocaust survivor, Primo Levi, who mysteriously fell to his death on April 11, (1987). April 11, the birthday of Joel Grey. Let’s just say I was all but pre-destined to perform the works of Joel Grey. There is an emotional connection that cannot be ignored. A witty, versatile song & dance man who endears himself to audiences with his exaggerated physicality, grand gestures and whimsical boyish charm…he knows how to connect with the audience and bring them along on his journey and that is precisely the legacy I hope to leave behind as well. And so... I say... or should I perhaps sing.... ."Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!"... to Shades of Grey!

..." I almost made it on my raft to the American coast, when I was picked up by the Navy and taken to the Guantanamo Bay Base"... It is at Guantanamo Bay that the rest of the world begins to see the paintings of Humberto Piloto, who tried to flee Cuba on a boat that he and four other friends had made.
Once in Guantanamo Bay, the paintings were greatly admired by the personnel there, and "it was the military people on the base that would provide the paint, brushes and canvases for me so that I could paint. The creative level going on in Guantanamo Bay is something that the world should know about, and it was at the base where I further reflected on my future."
Humberto Piloto received his formal training at a local art school in La Habana, Cuba. There he received most of his training in different techniques of the Plastic Arts. A graduate of the Polytechnic Institute for Industrial Design in Cuba, Mr. Piloto's paintings have been in display at diverse art galleries in Panama, Cuba and in the New York State area. He has continued painting since his arrival in the United States in 1994, and hopes to continue to study art. Mr. Piloto's goal is to one day own an art gallery where he can present the works of other artists who like to express their thoughts and feelings and communicate them to the public.

ANNUAL APPEAL |
![]() | |
Happy Holidays! The countdown to the holidays and the New Year has begun. Families are making plans to get together; gifts are being bought; donations are being sent in. Is the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport on your list? Without your gracious help, the Arts Council would not be here today. We are proud to say that we have made a great impact among the Long Island community and we thank you for all that you have done. Help us continue to make an impact.
We have many programs that need your support. High 5 Long Island is one of them. High 5 makes the arts accessible and affordable for teenagers by offering them the incredible price of $5 per ticket. We work with such venues as Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Staller Center for the Arts, Nassau County Museum of Art, and many others. This program gives these teenagers the opportunity to bring the arts into their lives in a way that would not have been possible without High 5. What better way to introduce the arts to the youth of today and to bring a better and more enriched attitude towards the arts? The director of a youth group wrote, “Our students are promising, yet underprivileged students…who have extremely limited exposure to the arts. By including our kids in the High 5 program and giving them access to the performances at the Tilles Center, you have made it affordable for our organization to achieve the goal of enriching the students’ live performance experiences. Our partnership with you has had a great impact on these students.”
Another great program that we offer in conjunction with the Long Island Composers Alliance is the Musical Composition Contest, and submissions come in from both local and international composers. This past year we had entries from England, Italy, Belgium, New Zealand, and the United States just to name a few. The compositions are judged and the winning piece is then performed by the Long Island Composers Alliance’s Music for Students program.
This year we have been exhibiting artwork at The Mall at The Source to showcase artists’ creations and for the enjoyment of shoppers. We also have a new glass enclosed exhibit space that features artwork of local artists in The Art Alcove. The Arts Council, Freeport Public Schools, and Village of Freeport have collaborated on a very exciting project: walking trail markers for a new health walk located on Freeport’s Nautical Mile.
We are also proud to have sponsored an outdoor summer concert series on the Nautical Mile. After a concert, an audience member said, “Thank you for bringing these concerts to Freeport. My friends and I couldn’t be happier. We loved sitting by the water and were so impressed with The East End Trio.” Another audience member said, “How lucky we are to enjoy such high caliber concerts right here on Long Island.”
Come and check out our Culture Calendar on our website, www.LIACFreeport.org for
a schedule of performances, exhibits, and special events that are presented by the Arts Council and our Affiliates.
The Arts Council works with both established artists and those just starting out. At our 30th Annual Juried Photography Show held last June, we had a special category that
gave teens an opportunity to submit entries. From the numerous submissions, two were selected to exhibit their photographs alongside the works of accomplished adult photographers. A mother of one of the teen entrants confided that her son, an 11th grade student, was not thriving academically and she’d been concerned about his future. She was so thankful when he found photography, which kept him engaged in school. He wrote to tell us, “I feel photography has changed my life in many positive ways. Without me being involved in photography I feel I would not be as constructive nor would I have been able to set certain goals. The Long Island Arts Council at Freeport has also influenced my life by making me aware and giving me the opportunity to enter a variety of photo contests where I can benefit from the experience. It also has given me a look towards my future. I’m very interested in being a forensic photographer or a photo teacher. The Arts Council has benefited me in many ways.”
By your support you are not only helping the arts community, but also yourself and others like you who welcome the arts into their lives. Won’t you be that person to help an artist, youth, fellow Long Islander to live and become enriched in the wonderful world of the arts?
Please make a tax-deductible donation today to help the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport, a catalyst for artists and students and everyone in our community. We encourage you to sit down and write your check immediately and send it to 130 East Merrick Road, Freeport, NY 11520. Or if you prefer, you can send us your credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express) number, expiration date, signature, and the amount of your donation. Donations can also be made on our website through PayPal at www.LIACFreeport.org. If you have any questions, please call 516-223-2522.
Every level of support is appreciated. Thank you in advance from the Board of the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport!
